“We’ll never know where we were at in the line-up… all we know is that on March 24, 1996, we said yes… and we’re still saying yes!” Steve Gray, founder and senior pastor of World Revival Church of Kansas City (formerly the Smithton Outpouring).
This month marks the ten year anniversary for Pastor Steve and Kathy Gray and World Revival Church in Kansas City. What started out as “the cornfield revival” of Smithton, Missouri in 1996 has evolved into a Kansas City-based ministry with a global impact.
Three years into the Smithton Outpouring - one of three major revivals of the 90’s - Steve Gray felt the promptings of God to move the revival. “God had given me no guarantees that the revival would continue,” Gray recounts, “but he did tell me ‘I will guarantee it will end if you don’t move.’”
With that word in his heart, Pastor Steve and his leadership team began to search out a new location that would make revival accessible to the world. After many trials and tests of faith, 63 acres of interstate frontage land were bought in May 2000 and the dream for global revival continued at 9900 View High Drive in Kansas City, the current campus of World Revival Church.
The next several years were spent establishing the ministry in Kansas City. After the main building was finished, although the need for an educational building was pressing, an important decision was made to first build the House of Hope and Healing - as a gift and outreach into the community. The educational building was next on the slate with the capacity to house a K-12 academy and the World Revival School of Ministry, newly developed in the fall of 2000.
As physical foundations were laid, God was building a Kansas City congregation with the core of believers that moved with the ministry from Smithton and new people drawn to the revival in Kansas City.
Everything was “made ready” and on May 2, 2008 a fresh updraft of God’s presence and power blew in on the Kansas City congregation. Revival was in full-scale again and burning hotter than ever. Once again, visitors streamed to the revival, now becoming known as the Kansas City revival.
November 2008 marks the moment when God catapulted the revival into the nations. Marcus and Joni Lamb, president and founders of Daystar Television Network, interviewed Pastor Steve on their “Celebration” program. Afterwards, the offer was made to air services from World Revival Church live on Daystar - to their viewing audience of over 200 nations.
Since that time, the international impact of the Kansas City revival has been phenomenal and growing. With record-breaking numbers of callers during Daystar’s live broadcasts, the hunger of people worldwide for a real move of God has been proven week after week.
