Stay Alert

Stay Alert

1 Peter 5:8  "Be self-controlled and alert.  Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour."

As a woman, I know that if I go out alone at night, I must stay alert at all times.  As I come out of a store, I have my keys ready.  I'm not talking on the phone or daydreaming.  I'm loooking around to make sure there isn't someone lurking around who could jump out and harm me.  I also look to see what kind of vehicle is parked by mine.  In other words, my mind and body are on high alert.  That's good, but what about in the spirit realm?  We need to be as alert and engaged in what's happening in the spirit realm as we are the natural.

There are things we can do to help prepare ourselves for spiritual action.  Of course reading , studying and meditating on the Word of God is very important to our spiritual growth and strength.  How can we expect to stand against an enemy if we have not stored up the true weapons of warfare inside of us.  We must also spend time speaking to God and listening for His voice.  Jesus said that He only said and did what the Father told Him, John 5:19  &  John 14:24.  When your mom or best friend call you on the phone, they don't have to identify themselves; you recognize their voice because you have spent time listening to them talk.  We must spend time with our Lord, listening to Him, so at a moments notice, we recognize His voice and can move.

Our enemy, the devil is waiting for us to let down our guard, be in a passive mood or distracted by our everyday circumstances.  If you are half asleep, you could fall into his trap.

We also need to be alert to the God moments that he sets before us.  So many times God sets opportunities before us to reach out and help or encourage someone.  Maybe he's asking you to  help someone financially or just spend time getting to know them.  It could be an opening to speak an encouraging word to a teen or a single mom.  But if we are not prepared and alert, we will miss the opportunity.

1 Peter 1:13 says: "Prepare your minds for action..."  It means to gather up your garments and be ready for physical action.  We need to prepare our minds and hearts for spiritual action by doing the things we have just talked about.

Ask God today to touch you with the enabling power that you may begin to have your mind transformed to a new way of thinking and that you will be stimulated to action.  We don't know what the future holds but we do know that the Bible says we must be prepared and ready at all times.

So STAY ALERT!!!
